IS YOUR WASHING MACHINE HARBOURING MOULD?

Updated: Jun 24, 2022

When it comes to buying a new washing machine, one of the hardest decisions to make is whether to choose a front-load vs a top-load unit.

While front loaders tend to be more energy and water-efficient than top loaders as they can wash larger loads, they are notorious for harbouring mould in their door.

The tightly sealed rubber gasket on the inside of the door combined with moisture and an accumulation of dirt, allows mould to grow inside the lip of the door. So if you have a front loader, make sure you clean it thoroughly and often.

A good clean with vinegar will assist in preventing mould growth and keep your washing machine from developing a musty odour.

Top-loading washers should also be cleaned frequently around the top of the inside, under the lid and the agitator.

Another good tip is to leave the washer door/lid open to allow moisture to evaporate and fresh air to enter the machine.
